Now that we’ve had a report of our lack of support for it actually getting in the way of people booting systems under Xen, I think we need to do something about this. The goal here is to try to figure a way to deal with the (once again) issue of Linux having designed their support without a type-1 hypervisor in mind: They represent the topology behind the device by using PCI segment numbers outside of the normally used 16-bit range, and they assign numbers there themselves. With a hypervisor underneath, such assignment would better be done in the hypervisor, but - judging from history - reworking their support to fit such a model just for Xen isn’t likely to be welcome.

Therefore the question is whether we can come up with creative ideas how to retrofit Xen support underneath the existing Linux driver.
